Madhur Bajaj: A Visionary Leader and Pillar of Indian Industry Passes Away at 73

Veteran industrialist Madhur Bajaj, former vice-chairman of Bajaj Auto and a prominent figure in India’s business world, died in Mumbai at the age of 73. He breathed his last after a brief illness at Breach Candy Hospital on Friday morning, leaving behind a legacy of leadership and contribution to Indian industry. He is survived by his wife Kumud and two daughters Neelima and Nimisha.

Legacy of Leadership in Business and Industry

Madhur Bajaj, a prominent third-generation member of the iconic Bajaj family, was the grandson of industrialist and freedom fighter Jamnalal Bajaj. Over the years, he held several important positions in the Bajaj Group, including directorships at Bajaj Finserv Ltd, Bajaj Electricals Ltd and chairman of Maharashtra Scooters Ltd. His deep involvement in these firms helped shape the direction of the group’s diversified growth.

Educated at some of the world’s best institutions, Madhur Bajaj began his academic journey at The Doon School in Dehradun. He then graduated from Sydenham College in Mumbai in 1973 and received an MBA degree from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1979. His educational background laid the foundation for a career marked by innovation, strategic foresight and leadership.

Last year, Madhur Bajaj resigned from his position as vice-chairman of Bajaj Auto due to health concerns. Even after his resignation, his influence across the group’s various companies and the broader Indian industrial landscape remained strong. Throughout his career, he was recognised for his ability to steer businesses with clarity and compassion.

Beyond his business roles, Madhur Bajaj was deeply involved in industry bodies and associations. He served as president of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) from 2005 to 2007 and was actively involved in the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA). These roles reflected his commitment to the growth of Indian industry, particularly the automobile and manufacturing sectors.

Tributes poured in from across India’s corporate and political spheres upon his demise. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal expressed his heartfelt condolences on the demise of Madhur Bajaj and remembered him as a visionary whose leadership took the Bajaj Group to new heights and contributed significantly to India’s growth story.

Industry leaders also paid tributes to him. Baba Kalyani, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Forge, described Madhur Bajaj as a senior and respected member of the Bajaj family and a close friend. He highlighted Bajaj’s significant contributions to several industry organisations and praised his enduring commitment to excellence and industry growth.

MCCIA Chairman Sanjay Kirloskar recalled Madhur Bajaj’s transformational role during his presidency from 2006 to 2008. Under Bajaj’s leadership, MCCIA forged strategic alliances such as the MoU with UNIDO to assist MSMEs meet global standards. Kirloskar praised him as a visionary who supported innovation, entrepreneurship and emerging sectors such as animation and gaming.

In recognition of his contribution to Indian society and business, Madhur Bajaj received the prestigious ‘Vikas Rattan’ award from the International Friendship Society of India. The honour was a testimony to his efforts to enrich human lives and drive meaningful progress through industrial leadership.

The demise of Madhur Bajaj marks the end of an era for the Bajaj Group and the wider Indian industrial community. His strategic insights, unwavering integrity and people-centric leadership have left an indelible mark. As industry leaders, colleagues and well-wishers reflect on his contributions, Madhur Bajaj’s legacy stands as a guiding light for future generations of Indian entrepreneurs and business leaders.
