Legendary guitarist Brian May delivered an unforgettable performance at Coachella 2025, just seven months after a minor stroke left him unable to move his arm. The 77-year-old Queen icon made a surprise appearance during rising star Benson Boon’s spectacular set, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
An iconic collaboration with Benson Boon
The 22-year-old Boon wowed fans with his high-energy stage presence, wearing a bold all-white jumpsuit and exuding the kind of charisma that’s led to him being compared to the late Freddie Mercury. But the real showstopper came when Brian May took to the main stage midway through a performance of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The crowd applauded as the rock legend nailed the song’s iconic guitar solo.
Despite recent health troubles, Brian May shows no signs of slowing down. Smiling throughout the show, he performed with precision and power, earning an enthusiastic ovation from Boon and a standing ovation from thousands of festival-goers. After his solo, he left for a bit, but returned shortly after to jam with Boon and guitarist Sus Vasquez during Boon’s hit single “Beautiful Things.” Known for dramatic stage stunts, Boon even jumped on top of Brian May at the end of the set – adding a dramatic flair to an already epic moment.

Hints before the performance
Before the performance, Boone paid tribute to May, asking the audience to “give it up for Queen guitarist Brian May” and expressing appreciation by kneeling in front of the rock icon.
In the days leading up to Coachella, fans suspected something special was about to happen. Brian May had hinted at a possible collaboration with Boone on social media, sharing photos from a private plane with the young artist. One caption read, “Will cherish this moment on the plane with the 22-year-old genius @bensonboone. I am proud and happy to say we are now officially friends.”
Triumphant return after health struggles
This heartwarming moment between two generations of musical talent was a powerful comeback for Brian May, who announced in September 2024 that he had suffered a small stroke. He described the experience as frightening, revealing that he had suddenly lost control of his hand. At the time he feared it could be the end of his ability to perform.
“The good news is that after the events of the last few days I can play the guitar again,” he shared on Instagram. “The little health issue I mentioned happened about a week ago, and they diagnosed it as a small stroke. I have to say it was a little scary.”
Thankfully, Brian May’s condition stabilized and with the support of his wife Anita Dobson, he has slowly returned to the music world. Dobson revealed in December that May has started playing piano again and is recovering. His appearance at Coachella now marks a triumphant milestone in that journey.
Resilience and legacy
This isn’t the first time the Queen guitarist has faced serious health challenges. In 2020, Brian May suffered a heart attack that required him to have three stents inserted. At the time, doctors detected serious artery blockages that could have proved fatal without treatment. He later credited the angiogram for saving his life.
Despite these setbacks, Brian May remains a force in the music world and his Coachella performance is proof that his passion and talent have not faded. The surprise guest spot not only celebrated Queen’s enduring legacy but also delivered a touching moment of resilience, inspiration, and pure rock magic.
Brian May’s music still connects generations
When fans sang along to every word of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and waved their arms in unison under the desert sky, it was clear that Brian May’s music still connects generations. And with his triumphant return, the guitar legend reminded the world that no matter what the odds, true rock stars never fade.
Whether jamming with a talented new generation artist or returning to the biggest stages, Brian May continues to prove that his story is far from over.
