Arson Attack on Governor’s Mansion: Josh Shapiro and Family Evacuated Safely

In a shocking incident on Sunday morning, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family were forced to evacuate his official Harrisburg residence after a fire broke out inside the mansion. Authorities have arrested Cody Ballmer, 38, of Harrisburg, who allegedly broke into the property and set the fire.

Celebration Turns to Crisis

The fire broke out around 2 a.m., just hours after the Josh Shapiro family hosted a Passover Seder at the historic residence that has long been the home of Pennsylvania governors. Shapiro, his wife Lori, their four children, two dogs and a visiting family were awakened by state troopers and safely escorted out of the building. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

Suspect Reportedly Planned Attack

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Balmer scaled the approximately seven-foot-high security fence surrounding the mansion and loaded what authorities described as a “homemade incendiary device.” He managed to evade the troopers, enter the residence and start a fire before fleeing the scene. He was captured later that day in the Harrisburg area.

Systematic and Targeted Arson

Authorities revealed that Balmer acted in a well-planned and methodical manner. He was inside the mansion for less than a minute, yet he caused a great deal of damage. Though the specific motive for the attack is still unclear, Governor Josh Shapiro has described the attack as a targeted attack.

“This kind of violence is not okay,” Shapiro said during a press conference in front of the fire-damaged southern wing of the mansion. “It’s becoming too common in our society. And I don’t care if it’s coming from one side or the other — it has to stop. We have to be better than this.”

Fire Damage and Aftermath

The fire caused significant damage to the portion of the residence where the Passover celebration was held. Visible damage included broken glass, blackened bricks and a burned piano. Photos showed the aftermath, including burned furniture and broken windows. The 29,000-square-foot mansion, built in 1968, holds historical significance and is often used for public events.

Charges and Federal Investigation Ongoing

Law enforcement officials, including Lt. Col. George Bivens, emphasized that Ballmer planned the attack in advance. The suspect is expected to face multiple charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson and aggravated assault. Both state and federal charges are being considered, with FBI and Justice Department support already underway.

Josh Shapiro Stands Firm Amid Violence

Despite the traumatic event, Josh Shapiro remains resolute. He stressed that the attack would not stop him from carrying out his duties as governor or from celebrating his religion. “We have celebrated our religion proudly and we will do so again,” he said. “No one can stop me or my family or any Pennsylvanian from openly and proudly celebrating our religion.”

Gratitude to First Responders and Ongoing Security Review

Shapiro also expressed gratitude to first responders and law enforcement who ensured his family’s safety. “We are overwhelmed by the prayers and support we have received,” Josh Shapiro said. “Your prayers energize us.”

As the investigation continues, state police are conducting a thorough review of the mansion’s security protocols to prevent future breaches. Josh Shapiro expressed full confidence in their ability to protect him and his family in the future.

Josh Shapiro’s Message of Strength

The attack has garnered widespread attention, with messages of support coming in from across the country. Still, the incident highlights a troubling trend of political violence. As Josh Shapiro said, “If the purpose of this was to stop me from doing my job, I would fight back even harder.”

With unwavering resolve and strong words against hate and violence, Governor Josh Shapiro continues to lead with strength and clarity – sending a powerful message that Pennsylvania will not be intimidated.
